The DeKalb Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is hosting its first Young Artists Concerto Competition to encourage and recognize local and talented high school student musicians. Winners receive a cash award plus the opportunity to perform with the DSO on March 21, 2017 during their 2016-2017 concert season.
The competition is open to Piano, Strings, Winds, Brass and Percussion students attending high school (as of January 1, 2017).
All concerto winners will have the opportunity to perform their auditioned piece with the DSO. In addition, the first place winner will receive $500, the second place winner will receive $300 and the third place winner (if one is selected) will receive $200. First place winners are disqualified from participating in the year immediately following their award.

- Applicants must bring their own piano accompanist to play the orchestral reduction. (Piano soloists need not have an accompanist)
- The applicant is required to bring for the judges one original score of the soloist’s part. If the edition of the music is in the public domain, copies or printouts from the Internet are acceptable.
- Mark in the score any cuts in pencil .
- The audition should not exceed 15 minutes.
- Piano accompanists should take appropriate cuts in orchestral sections.
Applications were to be postmarked by December 31, 2016 so applications are no longer being accepted.
Applicants will be notified by e-mail of their acceptance to the final auditions by Monday, January 9, 2017. Final auditions will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Georgia State University, Fine Arts Building, Clarkston Campus. Finalists will be notified by e-mail 10 days prior to their assigned audition time. A panel of impartial professional musicians appointed by the Music Director will judge the final auditions. Winners will be notified by Monday, February 6, 2017. The decisions of the judges are final. Judges are not required to nominate a 2nd or 3rd place winner if no applicant qualifies.
The competition winners will perform at the DSO concert on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 8pm. They will be expected to attend an orchestral rehearsal on Sunday evening, March 19th, and a dress rehearsal on Monday evening, March 20th.
